Uses

Lexapro is an anti-depressant from the family of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs. Lexapro helps to restore the brain's chemical balance by increasing the supply of a substance in the brain called serotonin. Lexapro appears to relieve depression by increasing serotonin without affecting many of the other chemicals in the brain that influence mood.

How to Use

Doctors usually prescribe 10 mg of Lexapro per day to start out. This pill is taken once a day in the morning or evening. You can take Lexapro with or without food. To prevent missed doses, make sure to fill your prescription ahead of time. To help get the best results, stick to the instructions your doctor gives you.

Side Effects

LEXAPRO is well tolerated by most people. The most commonly reported side effects of LEXAPRO are nausea, insomnia, problems with ejaculation, drowsiness, increased sweating, and fatigue. Most of the side effects experienced by patients taking LEXAPRO are mild and go away with continued treatment, and usually do not cause patients to stop taking LEXAPRO.

Precautions

It is safe to use Lexapro with most other drugs, but not with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). This combination is dangerous, so you shouldn't use medications from the two categories within two weeks of each other. Tell your physician about all of your prescriptions, as well as any nonprescription product you regulary use, including herbal supplements and diet drugs.

Drug Interactions

This medication should not be taken with MAO inhibitors. Your doctor or pharmacist can give you more information on MAO inhibitors. Wait 5 weeks after stopping escitalopram before starting a non-selective MAO inhibitor. Wait 2 weeks after stopping an MAO inhibitor before starting escitalopram. Do not take escitalopram with the herb, St. John's Wort. If you are taking medications for migraines such as Imitrex, talk to your doctor before starting escitalopram.

Notes

Do not allow anyone else to take this medication.

Missed Dose

Take any missed dose as soon as possible but not if it is within 4 hours of the next dose. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose.

Storage

Store at room temperature and keep away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom.
