Clonidine

(Generic Name: Clonidine / Catapres)

Uses

Clonidine is an antihypertensive. Clonidine relaxes blood vessels, relieving high blood pressure (hypertension). It is not a cure and has to be taken regularly. Untreated high blood pressure can cause a stroke, heart failure, or damage to your kidneys. Clonidine can be used to treat conditions other than hypertension. It can help to diagnose pheochromocytoma, a tumor of the adrenal gland.

Directions

Take clonidine tablets by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Do not stop taking except on your prescriber's advice.

Storage
STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light.

Miss a dose

Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.

Precautions

This medicine can cause dizziness or drowsiness. Exercise caution when driving or performing other activities that require your full attention.

Side effects

Possible side effects with this medicine include: constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, loss of appetite. To avoid lightheadedness, arise slowly from a lying down position.

Interactions

Inform your doctor if you are taking beta-blockers (e.g., atenolol, propranolol), or drugs to treat depression (e.g., amitriptyline). Certain over-the-counter cold preparations can have adverse effects when taken together with clonidine.
