Cardizem

(Generic Name: Diltiazem)

Uses

Cardizem is a calcium-channel blocker. It affects the amount of calcium found in your heart and muscle cells. This results in relaxation of blood vessels, which can reduce the amount of work the heart has to do. Cardizem relieves different types of chest pain (angina); it is not a cure.

Directions

Take Cardizem tablets by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. Take Cardizem tablets on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after food. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often then directed. Do not stop taking except on your prescriber's advice.

Storage

STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light.

Miss a dose

Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.

Precautions

This medication should probably not be used if you have any history of liver disease or of congestive heart failure. Patients are also cautioned not to open, crush, or chew the extended-release forms.

Side effects

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible: confusion, mental depression; fainting spells, lightheadedness; redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth; skin rash, itching; slow heartbeat, irregular heartbeat; swelling of the feet and ankles; unusual weakness or tiredness; unusual bleeding or bruising, pinpoint red spots on the skin.

DO NOT share this medicine with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT use this medicine for other health conditions. Keep this product out of the reach of children. If using this medicine for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
